Noida woman booked over PM remarks at CJP Jantar Mantar protest

Noida Police have registered a zero FIR against Ruchika Singh, a Noida resident, over alleged abusive and objectionable remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar on 23 July, officers told The Indian Express on Thursday.

The complaint was filed on Wednesday at Expressway Police Station by Smriti Singh, a Ghaziabad resident. Police booked the case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 352 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), 353(1) (statements conducing to public mischief) and 356(1) (defamation), an officer said.

Case shifted to Delhi

A zero FIR can be recorded at any police station and then moved to the station with jurisdiction. Officers said the file has been transferred to Parliament Street Police Station in Delhi. One officer told The Indian Express the accused “is a resident of Faridabad, and used to stay in Noida,” and that further investigation would sit with the station that covers the protest site.

ThePrint reported that the zero FIR was lodged on 29 July and quoted the complaint as saying the remarks “hurt the dignity of the constitutional post” and showed a “deliberate intention to spread hatred and disturb public peace.” The same report said a Uttar Pradesh officer confirmed the hand-over to Delhi Police because the alleged incident falls under Delhi’s jurisdiction.

Both outlets link the case to a video that spread online showing a woman at the Jantar Mantar protest using strong language against the prime minister.
