Bihar's 'Gen Alpha' schoolchildren march 4 km for fans, water, toilets — staff salaries cut

Around 50 students of Simuara Middle School in Bihar's Gaya district — mostly from classes 6 to 8 — marched roughly four kilometres to the Tikari Sub-Divisional Magistrate's office on Tuesday, refusing to disperse until someone listened.

They sat outside the SDM's office demanding drinking water, functional toilets, electricity, classroom fans, uniforms, better mid-day meals and a school building in decent repair. A video of the protest went viral on social media, showing the children sitting on the ground, some holding handwritten placards, as teachers and officials tried to persuade them to return.

"The Executive Magistrate was immediately sent to speak to them. After the SDM returned, he met a group of six students, including three girls, in the presence of teachers," an official told The Indian Express. "The complaints primarily related to basic facilities such as drinking water, toilets, the quality of the mid-day meal, uniforms and the absence of fans."

Taking cognisance, Tikari SDM Praveen Kundan constituted a three-member inquiry committee — comprising the Assistant District Supply Officer Chandan Kumar, Executive Officer Ranjeet Singh and Block Development Officer Yogendra Paswan — to inspect the school and submit a report. Show-cause notices have been issued to school staff, and their salaries for the day of the demonstration have been suspended pending satisfactory explanations.

The protest comes amid a wider wave of student-led demonstrations across India over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak and education-system accountability, which the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) anchored at Jantar Mantar until July 25.
