Jantar Mantar memories linger as CJP protest site is painted white

On Sunday afternoon, municipal crews systematically painted over the final physical markers of India’s 36-day student sit-in at Jantar Mantar. White paint covered the red and blue police booths, swallowing a hastily drawn sketch of a cockroach holding a pen and the spray-painted slogan “Ye desh hamara hai” (This country is ours).

Along the red stone boundary walls leading towards Kerala House, messages left behind by demonstrators met the same fate under uneven coats of paint. Damaged road dividers, buckled under the weight of crowds, were under repair, while high-pressure water tankers washed away dust and footprints from the pavements.

Yet, as workers loaded trucks with discarded tarpaulins, steel tumblers, and thin mattresses, those remaining at the capital's historic protest venue reflected on a movement that forced the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

• NDMC Cleanup: Municipal teams collected leftover belongings, posters, and trash. The clearing crew worked throughout Sunday to restore traffic flow and clear pathways near Tolstoy Road.
