Himanta defends Assam minister after daughter joins CJP protest

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has publicly defended Cabinet Minister Keshab Mahanta after Mahanta's daughter, Dibisa Mahanta, participated in a solidarity protest organized in Guwahati in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) agitation at Jantar Mantar.

Addressing reporters in Guwahati late Saturday, Sarma rejected calls from political opponents to hold the Revenue and Disaster Management Minister accountable for his adult daughter's political choices.

Solidarity rally in Guwahati. On Thursday, hundreds of students gathered at Chachal, Guwahati’s designated protest site, demanding the resignation of then-Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and expressing solidarity with CJP demonstrators in Delhi. Assam Police and CRPF personnel were deployed at the venue.

Minister's daughter in video. Social media clips confirmed that Dibisa Mahanta, a United Kingdom-educated postgraduate and daughter of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Keshab Mahanta, raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and criticized police lathi-charges against students in Delhi.

Chief Minister's response. Sarma stated that adult children make their own political decisions and should not be linked to their parents' official roles. "How can I be answerable for what my children say? Once children grow up, their actions should not be linked with their parents," Sarma said, while adding that he disagreed with her remarks against the Prime Minister.

Police action. Assam Police arrested at least six participants following the Chachal protest under penal provisions related to criminal conspiracy and public order.

  • Whether Dibisa Mahanta holds formal membership in the Cockroach Janta Party or participated solely as an independent student activist.
  • Cabinet Minister Keshab Mahanta has not issued a public statement on his daughter's participation or Sarma's comments.
